Would you like to join the excavations at Chlorakas-Palloures as a student? Please see the information below!
• The Palloures project is looking for highly motivated students to join the 2024 excavation. The project is a collaboration between Leiden University and the University of Cyprus. Since 2015 a team of archaeologists are excavating the remains of a large Middle- to Late Chalcolithic (2900-2400 BCE) settlement along the coast near the modern city of Paphos. The settlement comprises of round buildings with stone wall foundations, hearths and other internal storage and food preparation installations. Find material consists of large amounts of ceramics, ground- and chipped stone, animal bone and human burials. Sporadically, figurines and metal artefacts are found. We sample intensively for botanical remains, and for micromorphology. The excavation is an academic research project and a fieldschool for students of archaeology.
• Students will be trained to become confident excavators, and learn about excavation techniques and sampling methods, archaeological documentation of features, plans and sections, digital documentation methods such as dGPS, drone photography, 3D photogrammetry, database work. In the afternoons students will be part of the finds processing team, washing finds, as well as analysing, describing, and
drawing them.
• The excavation team consists of around 25 students and 10 staff members of many different nationalities. The season runs for six weeks, from June 22 to August 4. We work 6 days a week, Saturdays off. Accommodation is in the Agiou Nikolaou Primary School of Chlorakas in mixed dorms and
tents. Food is included for the workdays. Students of all levels of experience are welcome to apply. We are looking for highly motivated students. For Leiden-BA2 students your Fieldschool 2 budget will be transferred to the Palloures project to cover expenses related to your participation in the project. All students also cover their own travel expenses.
